Taking the necessary maintenance precautions will help ensure the integrity of your roof and maximize performance. A poorly maintained roof is more likely to fail prematurely or have any range of leak issues. In Southeast Texas, especially the Conroe, Willis & The Woodlands area are known for our pine trees. Despite their nice evergreen look across the landscape the acidic pine needles that they drop all year round can quickly stop up valleys and gutter systems. Keep roof surfaces and gutters free of debris to prevent water damming. Water should be able to evacuate the roof unimpeded.
Also on the subject of trees, it’s important to trim back overhanging limbs. As the wind blows these limbs can rub and chafe the shingles.
Make annual inspections of your roof. If you are unable to do so then call a reputable roofing company such as Discount Roofing and have them perform a thorough inspection of the entire roof system. An inspection should include observing the overall condition of the shingle for curling, loss of granule, roof strikes by limbs and other debris or fibreglass beginning to show along the edges of the shingle tabs. Check flashings at walls, chimneys and skylights. These flashings may be loose or simply require a fresh caulking treatment. Make sure that turbines are turning freely and that other ventilation items are functioning properly. Plumbing jacks should be checked for dry rotting or splitting at the pipe base as well as squirrel damage especially if they are the lead variety.
Limit roof traffic if possible and when using an electric lawn leaf blower to remove debris be careful that the electrical cord doesn’t hang on shingle tabs where it can tear or damage them.
The climate in Southeast Texas can be brutal on asphalt shingles. The extreme heat and humidity can take their toll on your roof. Spring is just around the corner and before the heat ramps up is a good time to have your roof inspected and any necessary roof repairs performed for peace of mind.
